Catalysts are generally used to lower the energy input necessary for a chemical reaction to occur and to increase the corresponding reaction rate. On the industrial scale, it allows running reactions at lower temperatures.
Catalytic reaction schemes often go through a first step of adsorption of at least one of the reactants, and can thus be studied as simple adsorbents. Adsorbents such as zeolites, active carbons, MOF’S are also investigated for their properties of gas storage (hydrogen, C02). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and volumetry are techniques allowing the quantification of the adsorbate, and calorimetry provides key data for the determination of the strength and nature of the interactions.
